Why Video Compression Matters
Video files are among the largest files most people deal with. A 1-minute smartphone clip can easily exceed 200 MB. Sending videos via WhatsApp, email, Discord, or uploading to Google Drive quickly hits size limits. Compressing your video before sharing is the smart, practical solution.
How CompressAndGo Compresses Video — Without Uploading
Most video compression tools require you to upload your file to a remote server, wait for processing, and then download the result. This means your private videos pass through someone else's infrastructure.
CompressAndGo is different. It uses FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly — a version of the industry-standard video tool that runs entirely inside your browser, on your own device. Your video never leaves your computer or phone.
Supported Video Formats
CompressAndGo supports the following input formats:
- MP4 (.mp4)
- MOV (.mov) — common on iPhones
- AVI (.avi)
- MKV (.mkv)
- WebM (.webm)
- MPEG (.mpeg, .mpg)
- 3GP (.3gp) — common on Android
- FLV (.flv)
All output is delivered as MP4, the most widely compatible video format for sharing, uploading, and playback.
Quality Presets Explained
CompressAndGo offers three quality presets for video compression:
High Quality — Minimal quality reduction. Best for important videos where you want to preserve as much detail as possible. Results in a moderately smaller file.
Balanced — The recommended default. Good quality reduction with a significant file size decrease. Ideal for sharing on WhatsApp, Discord, email, and social platforms.
Max Compress — Maximum file size reduction. Quality is noticeably reduced, but the file will be as small as possible. Best when you need to fit a size limit at any cost.
Step-by-Step: Compress a Video
- Open CompressAndGo and click the "Videos" tab.
- Select your quality preset (Balanced is recommended for most use cases).
- Drag and drop your video file, or click to browse.
- The first compression requires a one-time ~30 MB FFmpeg engine download — this only happens once per browser.
- Watch the progress bar as your video is processed locally.
- When done, click the download button to save your compressed MP4.
How Long Does Video Compression Take?
Compression speed depends on your device's CPU, the video length, resolution, and selected quality. A 30-second clip typically compresses in under a minute on modern devices. Longer or higher-resolution videos take more time. The progress bar keeps you informed throughout.
