Compressing a 1GB PDF is one of the most demanding compression tasks — and CompressAndGo handles it entirely in your browser without uploading a single byte to any server.
Why Are Some PDFs 1GB?
PDFs grow to 1GB or more when they contain large numbers of high-resolution embedded images — typically scanned documents, large presentations, brochures with full-bleed photography, or multi-page reports with dozens of charts and photos.
How to Compress a 1GB PDF with CompressAndGo
- Open CompressAndGo at compressandgo.app
- On the Images & PDFs tab, enable Max Compression mode using the toggle
- Type your target size — for example 102400 for 100MB — into the KB input
- Drag your PDF into the upload zone or tap to browse
- Wait for the compression process to complete — large PDFs take longer due to the CPU-intensive rasterisation
What Is Max Compression Mode?
Max Compression mode rasterises each PDF page — rendering it to a canvas like a screenshot — and reassembles the images into a new PDF. This yields the deepest possible size reduction. For a 1GB scanned PDF with full-colour pages, the output can often be under 100MB.
Important Trade-off
When Max Compression mode is used, text in the output PDF becomes non-selectable because it is now part of the image. If you need searchable text, use Normal mode (the default) instead, which preserves text as vectors but achieves less dramatic size reduction.
Tips for Very Large PDFs
Close other browser tabs before compressing to free up memory. Allow extra time — a 1GB PDF can take several minutes to rasterise locally. CompressAndGo supports files up to 1GB.
Free, Private, and No Upload
